Encino's Fire History, Honestly Told

Encino has no anchor disaster, and we will not invent one. No major fire has burned into the neighborhood's streets in recent decades. What Encino has instead is geography: a hillside of continuous chaparral, south of Ventura Boulevard, on a mountain range that burns on every other side. That is why the ember-resistant zone applies here, and why LAFD inspects these streets every year.

The Honest Version

Lucky is not the same as safe

Some Zone Zero communities carry a defining fire: the Palisades, Altadena, Sylmar. Encino does not, and this site holds itself to real facts only. The record is what it is: the neighborhood's residential streets have been spared while the mountains around them have burned again and again.

The Sepulveda Pass, at Encino's eastern shoulder, is the clearest example. The December 2017 Skirball Fire started along the 405 in the pass and destroyed homes in Bel-Air. In January 2025, while the Palisades Fire burned on the coastal side of the range, a separate brush fire of roughly 40 acres broke out in the pass near the Getty Center. Small fires along the 405 corridor are a near-annual event.

Go back further and the range's defining fire started at its crest: the November 1961 Bel Air Fire burned about 6,090 acres and destroyed 484 homes just over the ridge from Encino's hillside, one of the most destructive fires in Los Angeles history.

And to be equally honest about what did not happen: the 2018 Woolsey Fire never reached Encino. It burned far to the west. Anyone telling you Encino "survived Woolsey" is selling something.

Why the Map Says Very High

Why Zone 0 applies here: hazard maps measure fuel and slope, not luck

CAL FIRE's 2025 remap expanded Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone designations across the Los Angeles hillsides, and Encino's slope south of Ventura Boulevard is mapped Very High. The inputs are physical: continuous chaparral, steep canyon terrain rising to Mulholland, and Santa Ana wind exposure. Amestoy Estates, Royal Oaks, and the streets above Braemar share those inputs with neighborhoods that have burned. The map does not wait for a disaster to say so.

Did the Woolsey Fire reach Encino in 2018?

No. The Woolsey Fire burned far to the west, through the Malibu and Calabasas area, and did not reach Encino. Encino's exposure that November was smoke and the spectacle of the same mountain range burning, not flame.
